Default Silhouette Cameo or Portrait?

I know the Cameo can cut up to 12" wide vs. 8" for the Portrait. I'm trying to figure out if it's worth it. I've cut 12" a few times, but for stencils for painting. Could I piece them together? Any other big differences?

The Portrait cuts 8" wide material and cardstock is 8 & 1/4" . I didn't want to need to trim 1/4" off of every piece of card stock before I could use it .

You don't need to trim the cardstock. The cutting area is only 8" wide, but the machine itself will take a full width 8.5" piece of cardstock.

You can piece them together and break apart designs to fit onto the smaller canvas of the Portrait. I've done this when I only had my CraftRobo (same size as the Portrait) and wanted a 12" wide lace piece. If you don't scrapbook and don't need to cut 12" cardstock all the time, then the Portrait is probably a good choice for you.
