I love the look of this stuff but haven't bought any yet, although the more wonderful ideas I see using it, the more I WANT some ...! What are the pros and cons, where is the best place online to get it (who has the best variety/prices)?

I found a tutorial that shows how you can make your own washi tape, using paper tape you get at the drug store in the first aid section, inks/and or markers, and stamps. Here it is:
I use it primarily in two ways. First, it is perfect to segue two different papers or to act as a break when using a large block of one solid color. Second, Washi tape is so fun and easy to use to decorate the inside of cards...no effort, great look. I bought most of mine from icopic, but everything is available on eBay...and you can probably get it right from your "neighborhood," minimizing shipping costs. Have fun looking!

I have some from A Muse Studio, they have sets of washi tape to match each of the four color families. It's very pretty, but I haven't tried it yet. I'll try to find this post after I do and tell you what I think. It's wildly popular, that much I know. As for expensive, it seems so, but I think it lasts for quite a while. Like expensive cosmetics/hair products. You shudder to pay for it, but it winds up lasting quite a long time, so it's not so expensive after all.
I love it and am shamelessly addicted to it! I use it to add fun and fast embellishment to a card, it looks great wrapped around a vase or glass votive candle. I like to seal my envelopes with it - just for added decoration. It also works great to hold your dies in place to keep the die in place as it goes through the machine. want. need. love me some more washi tape. LOL!
I can't do a thing with it. I use it to hold down dies, works awesome for that! other than that, I've see others use it but it appears to not be my thing...

I've seen it folded over itself on a string to make a cute banner for a card. I have some Christmas washi tape from Martha Stewart, but have not used it yet.
I don't think the price is outrageous. Removable scotch tape (what I use to hold down my dies) can be close to $7 at joann's, if it's not on sale, and I haven't planned ahead!!!
I think Cute Tape has a great selection, the prices aren't bad, and I don't feel ripped off on the shipping costs
I've never heard of it either. Just checked out that Cute Tape link, wow!!! Lot's of selection. Is it like fabric with adhesive on it or is it seriously like masking tape? Not sure I'd like masking tape feel on my cards. I prefer to use ribbon as a divider between two blocks of cardstock.
It is so much fun to use--it is like thin masking tape so it is sheer and peels off easily. Mine is mostly 15MM wide by 15 M on a roll. It is so cute when layered and I like it torn or cut.
I spoiled myself on our vacation this year (in Japan) and got 40 rolls (it's much cheaper in Japan than it is here)! I wish I had more because it's just too much fun!
I like to use it instead of photo corners or as a border. I've also made a PP by wrapping rows of washi around a piece of CS. I'm sure there's more uses for it that I haven't thought of yet.

I've attached a few examples of where washi tape was exactly what I needed. In the lighthouse one, there is pale turquoise around the card and the green striped is also washi tape around the mat.
I've also used pieces that I've torn for more grungy or vintage looking styles.
It's thinner than masking tape to me and has a less textured appearance - very smooth.
Sharilea, gaffer's tape is more like fabric tape with adhesive on the back - I think 7 Gypsies has patterned gaffer's tape.
price really isn't that bad. A Muse Studio sells 5 rolls for $21.95 and each roll is 10 M so that is less than 50 cents a meter. I don't know how I ever diecutted without it and I love to make my own dsp with it or in place of ribbon or, or, or.... Love the stuff
Just curious....can you use painter's masking tape to hold down dies...one would think it's a lot less expensive.

OMG!!! Your cards are gorgeous! I'm sold on Washi Tape now! Thanks alot! LOL. It does look really pretty. I'm going to get some and try it.

Washi Tape
I have seen washi tape used many fun ways on cards, s.b. pages, as well as art projects (such as canvas, paper journals, etc.) One way I want to try to use it, is to wrap edges. I saw Tim Holtz do that with his tissue tape. Since washi tape is paper tape, I figure it'll probably be comparable to Tim's tape.

Oh, thanks for sharing my video! That is so sweet. Someone commented that they got their paper tape at the dollar store! GENIUS! It would be a great way to see if you like using tape before you make the grand purchase. I do love washi tape, I think it is a great embellishment. But I tend to be a DIY-er to save a few $$$.
I'll still choose to have the professional washi tape at my disposal already made, but using first-aid paper tape to make your own is a great idea! Not only will it be fun to have some custom-made for projects, but I also think it looks like fun to make .

I had that happen with TH tissue tape too -- it works best if I'm wrapping it over the edge of something. A Muse hasn't pulled up on me.
I have a feeling we'll continue to see a lot of tape products out there ~ I'll never get through my stock of ribbon at this rate, LOL!
I think the major difference between making your own 'tape' by cutting and tearing strips of DP is that washi tape is transluscent. That may or may not be good considering your project. Also, it tears differently. I certainly can tell the difference but I have very good close vision. You would definitely have to tear so no white core shows to mimic the look in the best possible way. Because you can see through, i actually don't like the way it looks when straddled across two papers with high contrast, same as I don't like it when you can see through some ribbons in the same circumstance. I've actually backed some ribbons with Cardstock to keep them from being see thru. Like everything else, it's all what you like. I love how Mish Wooderson uses it!

Me, too! She is so talented! I have seen quite a few journal pages and art projects on which Julie Fei-Fan Balzer has used it. She is a very creative, amazing artist.
P.S. That was me, suggesting buying a roll at the $1 store to see if you like it. Paper tape is semi-translucent.
Oh yes ! I ALWAYS USE PAINTERS TAPE (Blue or Purple) to hold dies down for cutting or masking. It is super cheap....comes of very easily, is easy to see and work with, and leaves no residue.

Thanks for mentioning that! I have used it, too. I can't recall who it was but I'm thinking it may possibly have been Beate?, use the wider painters tape to cut stamp masks.

I was just thinking that, too... I've got some decorative thin paper (in fact, it's Japanese chiyogami paper, quite light almost like tissue paper). Something like that could work, cut into strips and backed with double-sided tape.
I've been using Washi tape for years. Some good on-line sources are Happy Tape and Ginko Papers (don't recall the web addresses). They are a bit pricey and very addicting...
I am away from home right now but I loved the idea of using painters tape to hold dies down. I sometimes get a residue with the removable tape that I have to use my glue eraser on. If you forget and wet emboss after you have cut and used it you have to do the project over...:-( I do "redo" enough as it is). Does the painter tape leave any residue at all?
I JUST tried this and it is awesome. Purchased my tape at the dollar store and stamped away. Fun to make your own to match your project. So Easy!!

After watching the tutorial on making your own, I tried it. Not thrilled that the ink never dried on the paper tape. I used regular SU ink and markers and smooch ink. Guess I would have to use permanent or heat set. Liked the concept but it just didn't work for me. Back to adding more washi tape to my wish list.

What sorts of stores in Japan did you find it in? I am heading to Tokyo at the end of the month and was hoping to find some.

I am going to try this using Stayzon. It does come in several colors - and would hopefully dry quickly
I make my own Washi tape. There are several tutorials for "Faux Washi Tape" on Google. I use everything from sticker paper to first aid tape.
You can also find a huge candy store deliciousness of Washi Tape over at Etsy. I did warn you, lol.
If your lucky enough to live in a city with one of the Japanese Dollar stores you can also find a huge array of beautiful Washi Tape. If your lucky enough to have a store like that I am jealous.

I do use painter's tape to hold down my dies, especially my Nesties when I used my CB. I use Stencil Tape which is pretty much the same but has a narrower width than traditional painter's tape. You could also just cut your painter's tape narrow. I like the narrower width so I don't have to worry about accidentally putting tape where my project is supposed to cut. I have done that. Least I admit it.
