Default Tonic Guillotine Cutter Problem....

I have the Tonic Guillotine cutter with the 6" base. got it for myself last year for my birthday.

I am having a problem with the cuts it is making, as it is kinda cutting the paper ragged! I thought it was supposed to be self sharpening, so I am not sure what to do. Any advice would be awesome!

Thanks!

Are you holding the clear piece down firmly when you cut? If not, that can be a cause of ragged edges.
It is self sharpening. You could also move the blade up and down a few times without any paper in it to sharpen it more.

If it keeps it up I would e-mail or call tonic and let them know. i had read somewhere that someone else was having this problem and when they called tonic sent a new blade and sharpening piece to put on the trimmer

Yes, be sure to hold the plastic guard down while trimming. Also, are you standing up or sitting while cutting? The angle of the arm will be different depending on your position. I have to stand up to cut PTI cardstock because it is so thick. If I don't, it will bend & tear the CS instead of cut sharply. But if I stand up, I get a crisp clean cut.

Try that!

I have the 12" cutter, it tears and shreds the paper about 4 inches into my cut. It has done this since I bought it about a month ago. I have tried standing and sitting. I always hold the plastic piece down. What is their website for me to contact them? Thanks!

How ironic to read this as I was just going to post about not getting good results with this trimmer. I did a search first and came across this post.

I bought it this weekend from Archivers but am debating taking it back. It is leaving my paper with ragged edges . I do stand up and I also have been using the plastic shield. So far I have only cut the GP cardstock and some cuts are smooth while other are ragged. Ggrrrrrrrrrrrr - does anyone make a good cutter?

Maybe you have a bad one? I've had my tonic cutter for a good 6 months now and love it - I have very clean cuts on absolutely everything from cardstocks to acetate to vellums - perhaps you have gotten a dodgy one...maybe worth returning it to try another one :-)

I'm sorry to hear you guys are having trouble with your trimmers. I've had mine (12" with 6" base) for a long time now, 3-4 years maybe, and I've had no problems at all. If I were you, I'd definitely contact the company. It is supposed to be self-sharpening. Good luck!
