I was just organizing my "stamping asylum" and I was clearing out some old ribbon that was given to me by a woman who did floral arranging. In order to conserve space, I was weeding out the stuff I will never use when a thought occured to me. Why not try putting the velveteen ribbon in the Sizzix to see if it would work? Well, it's amazing! I have the cutest little flocked ladybugs and fuzzy frogs, turtles and leaves! They are so cool looking that I'm going back right now to punch out some more but I wanted to share. It may not be an original thought, but I had never heard of it before. Happy stamping! Lynnor
SHUT UP!!!!!!!!!! What a brilliant thing!!!!! In fact, you've given me the first true SERIOUS reconsideration of actually buying a die cutting machine (I'm seriously, fanatically, obsessively loyal to my Coluzzle, but this piqued me!)!
OK, so have you posted your creations in the gallery? I wanna see!!!!!
Please? Pretty please? With velvet on top?

OOOHH! My aunt gave me her sizzix w/a BUNCH of dies, and I have LOTS of velvet left from my big sewing days! Can't wait to try it out myself! Maybe I can come up w/cute embellishments for dd's clothes or something! (I like the ladybug idea!)
There was an amazing article in Creating Keepsakes a couple months back regarding ribbon and die cuts written by Jennifer McGuire. She inspires me soooo very much - I have been thinking I need to just do this, but haven't had an extra minute because I'm sitting here reading/typing/playing - LOL. Thank you for bringing this back to the front of my brain!!! Perhaps I need to sign off and go and try it - you must post your creation
OMG! why didnt that ever occur to me!!?? what an awesome idea!!! AND another excuse to go out and buy more ribbon!!!!! Hey, do they make yellow velvet ribbon? I'm making a baby book and would love that for little duckies??!!! thank you so much!!!!!
Ooooooh, little yellow duckies sound so cute. I have some white ribbon, but no dies that would look right with it. Exactly, another reason to buy ribbon, and new Sizzex dies! I'm working on posting a quick card I made with one of hte ladybugs.

Oooh, Oooh!!! I dunno, but try FELT!!! Or that velveteen/suede paper!!!!!
I wonder if you need to back that stuff with card stock to get a good clean cut???

Julie, you won't have to forsake the Coluzzles because it works with the velveteen ribbon and suede paper too! At Christmas, I made some really neat poinsettas out of wide burgundy velveteen ribbon using the Flower Petals template. Just use a sharp blade and cut it with the back of the ribbon facing up. It probably wouldn't work on the felt though.

That's good to know too. I also have Coluzzle and got a bunch of templates from Creative Express for almost nothing! Gotta try that too.
Julie and all, I don't know if the Coluzzle works for all materials, but I was sort of on the fence about my Sizzix. When I figured out that I could cut CHIPBOARD (waaaay cheaper than buying it pre-cut in shapes), that was the selling point. I can also cut: cork, thin metal, fabric, and all kinds of specialty papers (window vinyl cling, Polyshrink, etc.).
The first thing I did was buy some flower shapes and some bookplates dies. Alphas work too, but note: Sizzlets will NOT cut the thicker materials, so don't get a Sidekick, go for the SizzIX and metal rule dies, although now that the Big Shot is here, hmmm....I'd probably buy that one if I had to do it over again!
Now off to find some of that velveteen ribbon!
Best,
Shannon

Here's another vote for the Sizzix for those awesome thicker materials! Another thing you can cut is that stuff that you use to make a custom stencil...I think plaid makes some...it's basically that opaque thin plastic that stencils are cut into so that you can paint, etc. through them. I have a layout where I actually used a stencil cutter to cut through that plastic to make some embellishments for my page, but the die cutting system would be much easier (and I suggested as much when I posted my layout on another site...5 months later it was in Creating Keepsakes Tips and Tricks, but not from me!).
Oh well, I was happy to discover it on my own and don't mind passing the idea on to you all!
I will try to find the layout in my computer files and post it so you know what I am talking about. The resulting shapes look like those Heidi Swapp "ghost" shapes you can buy in the stores.
Okay, I am feeling a bit lazy on this Friday and don't feel like resizing, etc. my layout again to upload here, so I am going to post a link to the other site for my gallery so you can see what I am talking about (it doesn't have anything to do with stamping anyway...I hope I am allowed to post a link to another site...please let me know if not and I will take it down):

SHUT UP!!!!!!!!!! Dangnabbit!!! I was so SURE I was NEVAH gonna get an actual machine . . . this does NOT bode well for my wallet.
Julie, don't hate me, but I have 3 Sizzix machines, 2 sidekicks, and over 1000 dies. I was a scrapbooking instructor for Michaels for over 6 years and found that their classroom supplies were very lacking. I ended up buying the machines for my students to use. It was a great investment. Now, as a SU Demo, I use them at least twice a day. There is a company on line, www.cross-cuts.com that MAKES dies to fit the Sizzix machines. I have bought almost ALL of the box dies, and just love them! They make great decorated hostess gifts!!!!
Good luck, and just think, you could be me in just a short amount of time! I use two rubber stamp display cases placed in the bay window of my center bedroom to hold my most used dies and ink pads!

Oh, man. Where am I gonna STORE the thing?????!!!!!
OK, now I know for sure I'm goin' non-electric, cuz, frankly, I prefer it.
But Sizzix or Big Shot . . . that is what the debate is . . .
I wanted to be able to make window CARDS, and the BS is big enough to do that, BUT, a friend of mine said she's had a heck of a time getting good window cut cards outta the BS system. . . :(
I figure if I'm gonna invest in one of these babies, I want maximum versatility for my buck, but I'm somewhat hesitant due to the above report she gave me . . . :(
Can anybody tell me what is the WIDEST size of paper the Sizzix will accept on the cutting bed?

Ok I have a million die cuts for Sixxiz and Quickutz and I have never tried any of these ideas. What kinda Velveteen Ribbon do you use? Is it normal stuff or like regular ribbon stuff like we use on cards? Does it work on regular Fabric also? I also have a Zip E mate and its suppose to cut thru my dies too but i haven't tried it as of yet. Thanks for all the great info...

Okay, I just measured mine...the measurement of the pad is 1/8 inch less than 5 inches across (how's that for technical LOL) and about 1/8 inch less than 6.5 inches long. Does that help at all...I hope somebody else answers with the actual measurements LOL

It does work on regular ribbon and regular fabric (the QuickKutz does NOT work on these other materials...just paper and cardstock as far as I am aware...not sure about the Zip e' mate). And be sure you only use this mixed media stuff with the regular Sizzix with the original (thick) dies...not Sizzlets, as somebody mentioned above.
sorry must have taken me to long to actually send my response!!!
I tried to find the crosscuts site but didnt have any luck with the address...do you have another one??? I would really be interested in seeing what dies they have...
I'm sooooo LOL right now - I have purchased ALL the goods to make ALL the above and have yet to take the time to do it - yep felt, chipboard, thick plastic to make ghosts, dies galore, red "wonder tape" to attach ribbon and other materials that you can cut, foil tape - all the above to do it and have yet to find time. Again the time problem seems to derive from me sitting here at the computer  Perhaps I should actually do some of those things that are whirling around in this little brain of mine - LOL

Amy, if I had a card 4 1/4 x 8 1/2" and wanted to insert just the front to die cut a window into it, could the Sizzix handle that? And, how difficult is it to align the dies to get the cut to go through precisely/accurately in a certain spot on the card?
I've never owned a die cutting machine before, so that's why I have all the questions.
It's so easy with my Coluzzle, cuz you can see through EVERYTHING. In fact, I prolly wouldn't bother getting a die cutting machine at all, if I thought the blade could cut through felt, and such similar materials, but I suspect it's just a little too thick for that teeny swivel knife, UKWIM?
Hmmmm. Mebbe I should just stick with my Coluzzle for making window cards, and get a Sizzix just for all the fun little shapes I could cut outta felt, and whatnot . . . My cousin had one and she wanted to get rid of it . . . I wonder if she'd sell it to me . . .

Julie...you may be right in keeping your coluzzle for the window cards...the only way I have found to do this is the put the cutting pad in the middle of your card...(open the card and place inside like a sandwich..) and then slide that combo under the pressure plate...centering may be difficult and the one time I tried it the card then had its real fold and another fold where it wrapped around the cutting pad...clear as mud?!
There may be a better way to do it and if so, I would love to hear about it...think of all the fun windows you could make!!! I only other hand have been making stamps of my dies...fun foam works great for that!!
Good luck with whatever you decide...
Cathy
P.S. I just thought of another way....Butt Sizzix?!?! I crack myself up.... LOL
****
Hopefully you saw the rest of it...I can't remember what I wrote exactly....I will try to reconstruct....
k...here's what I remember...I said that you might just be best in sticking with the Coluzzle because it's hard to line up the shape exactly where you want the window to go...you might try looking for a die with a clear window (they do make some, but I don't think I have seen any Sizzix dies like that...not sure about the Ellison Designs dies). You could take a scrap piece of cardstock and cut the shape out of that, stick it to your card where you want the window to be, and then position the clear window die over that shape. If you can't find a clear window die, you might be able to stack a couple of pieces of scrap cardstock together, cut the shape, and then try to position it on your card by "feeling" with the die until it lands in the cutting grooves. That probably makes no sense, but at least I know what I am talking about LOL!

This makes sense to me....and it would be better than my idea of folding it up over the die, because the back of the die would "emboss" the card a bit I am afraid when the pressure is placed on it. If you could find a way to not get another crease/fold in the card from the cutting pad, that would be the best way I think. So far, the concensus is to stick with the Coluzzle for the window cards LOL!
Oh, I forgot about the fun foam "stamps!" I have done this as well! SO FUN!
Also works really well for flattening bottle caps (new). I got a new mat and use the old one just for bottle caps because it will mess up the mat. You also have to use the adapter for the embossing dies to do this. Very quiet, fast, and easy on the fingers.

So, there's like no way to leave the card "open" and insert only the side you wish to cut through for a window?

No, not unless it was less than 5 inches across total...the opening where the pad slides through to get to the pressure plate is only 5 inches wide, so you are limited to the 5" parameter. In the instance of your 4 1/4 x 8 1/2 card, the 4 1/4 side is actually 8.5 inches wide when the card is open, right?
