Default water color paper

Hello everyone. It's been awhile since this discussion has come up and I thought I would re-visit it to see if anything has changed in regard to recommendations.

Through SCS it was suggested I use the Fabriano hot press 140 water color Extra White water color paper. It's good. But I was wondering if anyone has other suggestions.

My search has yielded info about watercolor paper from Walmart. I tried it and was not satisfied with it at all for cards. I also tried something from AC Moore, but it has way to much texture in it for what I am trying to achieve.

I love the smooth look, and would LOVE to find it in real white, but that does not seem to be an option with water color paper.

I would love to hear your thoughts, comments and suggestions.

As always, thanks for all your help.
Paula

I am interested in this too!! I have never done water coloring, but wanted to try it.
I bought a pad of Strathmore #140 cold press watercolor paper. It is not pure white and very textured. I would also like a smoother watercolor paper.

At Hobby Lobby I saw Hot press watercolor paper which is smooth, but it costs a king's ransom. It was sold in a very large sheet. ( 22' x 30" I think) and it was $9.95 . Dick Blick has little 5' x 7" pads of Hot press, but with shipping they would cost over a $1 a sheet.
Both of these choices are quite pricey to use for practice

I use the Strathmore 140lb cold press paper but the tablet with the brown cover (not the yellow cover) I find it to be easy to stamp on because it has less texture and perfectly workable for lots of blending. It's not pure white but it works for me ;)

I've had good results using Stampin' Up's watercolor paper...though I wish it were available in larger sheets.

And try the SU paper

Listen to Kim, she steered me in the best direction for WCP. The Brown covered tablet is best. I just recently bought the Yellow covered tablet (clearance special), and was very dissapointed on the texture and my colors bleeding together. Plus it was a little more difficult to heat emboss because of the "strong" texture and the fact that the stamped image wasn't "connecting" together because of the strong texture. So I am flipping my paper over and using the smoother side, which is better but not as good. Kim's paper suggestion is the best I have tried, and it is very strong paper and won't warp or bend as easily. I hope this helps, it's just my 2 cents

Yep, Kim knows her stuff! I have found the Strathmore to be a good value. Brown cover here too! My favorite EVER to watercolor on has been the Fabriano Mediovalis cards, but they are a little more pricey and not super practical...

I have found a Bright White from Arches, but only in the full sheets. Which was no biggie because I just cut them down to size. It is a lot whiter than the traditional white. Dick Blick carries it.

I use the Canson Arches WC paper. You can buy it here from Our Daily Bread Designs. I used to use the Strathmore but I prefer the Canson paper. It's not as textured and it is whiter than the Strathmore paper.
