Default What's the best way to cut legal pads to.....

I have seen some of the legal notepads cut in half with an altered cs cover and they are so cute! Can anyone tell me how you cut the legal pads in half and get the straight edge as thick as they are? What's the secret???? TIA!!

You can take the legal pads or whatever you want cut to staples or office max or similiar store and pay them to cut them. I've never done this, but have read about others doing it and it is pretty cheap.

I asked my Office Depot to cut the pads that I bought from them and they refused. What I finally did was use an old fiskars cutter, I cut down the front, flipped it over and cut down the back. If there were a few uneven edges, I use a craft knife just to even up the edge. Most of them came out very well. I tried only using a craft knife but my results were not good. I'm anxious to see how others handled cutting them, thanks for asking.

I bought the notepads at Office Depot and had them cut them over in the print department. They have a big machine that can cut like 100 sheets at a time. Mine charged $0.75 a cut. HTH!

Also, I have brought in packs of white CS that I got at W-M and had them cut it in half for card bases. So, you don't have to buy the stuff there to get it cut there. :o)

Could you possible be referring to the mini/junior legal pads? You can purchase them that size most anywhere pads of paper are sold (Walmart, Sams, etc).

I first tried to have my dh cut it using his tools, but that just tore the edges. He took it in to the printing department where he works and they have a special machine that clamps it and cuts it. I'd think that a small, locally owned printing store could do the same thing.

Here's a link to something like what I made, but not the exact thing. I used mine as a grocery list for the fridge:

Staples will cut anything purchased there for small fee....I second the finding a print shop...I have done that with other items and I also have a lifetime supply of small white squares done by a print shop when my boys were in 4-H Geology and needed mounting cards for their specimans.....I use them to stamp small images on or to see if I really want a color of ink.

Our Office Max and Office Depots will cut things like this for you. I take my reams of cardstock purchased at Sams over and have them cut in half all the time. They charge .75 per cut. So if you cut the entire ream in half that is ONE cut. .75 is a great price for the time and headache it saves me in cutting...
blessings.

My local UPS store cuts mine. You know the stores that are the same company as the big brown truck.

I know this question was asked a long time ago, but I thought I'd let you know I just got home from Fed Ex/Kinkos and they charged me $3 to cute 10 Jr. Legal Pads. The man told me it was $1.49 per cut and that he could cut 5 or 6 pads at once. Looks like teachers are getting notepads from my boys this Christmas!

I got some cut at Office Max. They only charged me for one cut for the bag. I noticed Office Depot has junior legal pads cheaper, but they are farther away, so I just went to Office Max. It worked out great for me.

Papertrey just started selling notepads. No more need to go and get my legal pads cut in two. Check out Nichole Heady's blog post about the new notepads and Take Note stamp set. She also has a template for covers:
http://nicholeheady.typepad.com/capt...take-note.html

On my blog, I have two samples: Holiday Planner and Spooky Books to Read

They are soooo much fun to make!

I buy the Staples 5X8 notepads (12 in a pack, 50 sheets per notepad) and get them cut at the store. I'm in Canada and the cost at Staples here is $1 per cut. The machine can't cut all 12 at once (too thick) but if I get a nice clerk they will make 2 stacks of 6 and only charge me for one cut. (the machine can take the length of 16" but they can't cut through 600 sheets at once) Sometimes I have to pay for 2 cuts but it works out to less than 60 cents per half size notepad once I'm done. It's about 58 cents Canadian and the pads have 50 sheets each instead of 25 (PTI only has 25.)

I've made a LOT of these notepads for Christmas this year. They're very addictive!

The pads I used are the mini pads that are 8"x5". Then I went to Office Depot to have them cut in half. It cost me 75 cents to cut 5 pads in half.

I think you could also use the regular letter size ones. A lot of these projects are junior legal pads. The 5x8 size. HTH. And I agree that the PTI ones are a little pricey for the thickness. I'm sure that a lot of people think it's worth it for the colors. But for now I'm happy with an office supply store product.

Love this idea. I think in the long run it would be a whole heck cheaper to go to you local office store and have them cut them. I do think PTI are a tad pricey, and don't forget shipping and handling on them as well. Why don't vendors online charge what the post office is charging flat rate in a box for $4.95? Anything up to 7lbs I think is a flat rate box for the flat rate price?

The ones I use are Staples brand - there are 12 pads in a pack and they are 50 sheets each - 5"X8" so cut lengthwise makes them 2.5"X8". You'll get 24 notepads from one cut package. Thicker and cheaper than PTI.

I had to get more last night!

I purchased some of these pads at Walmart yesterday. Coolest thing for me is that I work in a school district. I called our print shop and they have this machine that will cut through them. So I took them over this morning and they cut them for me! That's so nice of them!

The $4.95 flat-rate box (USPS calls this one "small") is only large enough to hold a VHS cassette tape. It's $10.35 for the next size up. There are vendors who advertise that they use these boxes for their shipping -- Stamp On This is one of them. The ones who don't, like Clearbags, tend to use either UPS or FedEx for all of their shipping.

I have a silly question about this project...is there a reason that you don't use the long pads in the $ section from Mikes? Are they too big? Are the legal pads cheaper? Help!!! I was thinking of trying these but wondered why not use the single pads that are out there. TIA

Don't know about the size of the pads at Mikes, but $1 each is pretty pricey. When you get a multi-pack of the jr legal pads at Staples, Office Depot, etc. and have them cut in half they are way cheaper. And sometimes you can find the multi-packs on sale which is even better.

You certainly could use the pads from M's (I'm assuming you're referring to the ones that are like "to do" lists). You could use any notepad you can wrap cardstock around when it comes down to it.

The ones that we are specifically referring to in this thread measure 2.5 inches wide by 8 inches long and are just cheaper and something "different"...they also don't have any designs/colours on them so you're not limited in the patterns/colours of cardstock you use when you alter them.

when you cut the legal pads in half, don't you end up with one that has the double lines going down the side?

Yep. I use those ones for my grocery list, or stuff that I don't care if there are lines on it.

Even with that, though, they are cheaper than what you can get elsewhere.

So you just use the half without the vertical lines for personal use, and the other side for the projects? Thanks. I looked at making this for Christmas presents, but that line really bothered me!

That is what I do. The line doesn't bother me for grocery lists, etc. But I don't want to give them away to other people! lol!

The staples notepads don't have lines running down them so both halves are completely useable for gift-giving. 24 mats for about 60 cents each (Canadian). I've gone through LOADS of them since Christmas. I need to get more!

Oh, good to know that about the Staples ones. I got mine at Office Max. Thanks for the tip on Staples!
