I have used baby oil with my Kohinoor pencils and it works well, but i haven't tried it with Prismacolors. I just bought the Verithin prismacolors. Does anyone use those? any feedback?

Default Inky Antics

Hello,

That is where I found it as well, and ended up ordering from them. It was very kind of you to leave this source for me and everyone else. I love the look of what others have been able to do with the gamsol technique, and am looking forward to see what I can do. Thanks again!

A little hijack here.

I was just reading through this thread and came across the above quoted entry and thought to myself ... what? Viking is no longer in business, they were taken over by Office Depot. Then I looked at the date of the posting ... from April 2005!

I had to chuckle ... it's funny how old threads get resurrected!

Default Tortillons or Stumps

Hey!

I see that they sell both the tortillons and blending stumps. I hear both are mentioned, what is your preference tortillons or stumps?

Thanks!

I'm glad someone clarified this...I tried the gel last night and it didn't go so swell. So, what keeps the paper from getting "oily" when you use baby oil? Seems it would make a mess, but I'm totally interested in my options!

I'd like to know the difference also, and what size tends to work best for stamping. Dick Blick offers like four sizes of one of the two...tortillons I think.

Waiting to place my order, so I can't wait to hear back from any willing soul!

I just bought a large bottle of oderless mineral spirits at hobby lobby in the arts section. I think it was 5.99 and will probably last me a lifetime

The paper doesn't really get oily but I must say that I used the baby oil when I was traveling so I could color on the plane. Hated it. After using the gamsol for a long time, the oil just doesn't do as well of a job in my opinion.

You want the stumps....get them from Jerrysartarama.com. They sell the Creative Mark ones and they are the best in my opinion. They wick better than the Made in China (even though they are) and they burr less than the Made in Taiwan. Size is a personal preference. I like Size 3 and use 2 when doing small areas. Some people only like the little ones.

I've used both Gamsol and baby oil. The neat part is that baby oil is non-toxic. The trick is to use it sparingly.

The first time I used the baby oil, I was dipping the stumps directly into the oil and that left an oily residue on the cardstock. There have been some other threads that suggest using small squares of felt, saturating those with the baby oil, and then touching your stumps to the felt. That method worked much better.

There is a close-up Before and After image on my blog: Blending Prismacolor Pencils with Baby Oil.

To those of you who are new to SCS, please note that this is a very old thread, started in 2005, and that the information about Prismacolor Pencils for a great price at Viking.com is no longer valid.

I always have to chuckle when really old threads are reborn. ;)

I saw the date...when you do a search on Google for Gamsol, it lands you on this thread...what keeps it active. Prices are not longer valid, but the info is still good!

Would like to know if you have OMS if you really need the blender pencil...the set I bought didn't come with one and I hate to pay for shipping...is it worth the "want" with OMS?

Thanks for the head's up. I actually have a ton of Prismacolor Pencils already, but hadn't heard of using the gamasol. Now I can go read and learn.

Gina K and Inky Antics sell Gamasol and blending stumps and if I remember correctly, not sure, Gina K's Stamp TV has a video tutorial on this technique.

I do not like the turpenoid. I have always used Gamsol, and the LSS was using turpenoid. It does not blend as nice and is rough to work with. My LSS has switched to Gamsol now since she tried mine.

Dick Blick has it. I bought a big can of it, and then some small glass jars (in the art area of M's). I put mine in the jars, and also had plenty to share with some friends. When they need a refill, they just bring me the jar.

Michael's and AC Moore also sells a brand of OMS called Sansodor by Winsor & Newton. That's what I've been using and it works wonderfully with hardly any odor. It's in a glass jar by the oil paints.

What problem? Knowing if the OMS you found it good. Just stick with Gamsol, it has the best health ratings and can be purchased locally at good art stores or online at Dick Blick. Buy the smallest bottle they offer because you don't need much. Lots of people say baby oil works too but IMHO it is WAY below the Gamsol. I've used the Mona Lisa OMS from Michael's but it is not as good and the health rating is not as good either.

Hi! New to this site and have been playing with the Gamsol and Prismacolors pencils. Boy I have a lot to learn...so far my attempts have come out "muddy" was using shades of brown to color a cat...goldenrod then chocolate, then light umber....it kind of blended into one. I'm going to go look for one of those dauber bottles at Michaels...
I too purchased my 48 set pencils from Hobby Lobby...good buy with the coupon!!
