Default yet another copic thread

okay. so. after sitting in a drawer for like, 6 months, my copics are now on my desk. i brought them out last night, looking for the black one, which i was using to write out a label (i know, a $5 marker, i KNOW).
but, i found them all. and remembered EXACTLY how much i spent for them. i don't have a lot, maybe 25. i bought individual markers at charette (which i had to go to for a graphic design class i took). and it wasn't cheap. i have my SU! markers (which i use all the time, cause the colors coordinate with my cardstock and such).
but, now, i have an ink that will work with the copics (memento). and i know that having them sit in a drawer isn't the best thing. i want to USE my markers. and i'm a graphic design student. so i know i'll need more eventually.
SO. i need to expand my collection.
where do you buy your copics? i have the sketch style ones, and am looking for the best prices. ON INDIVIDUAL MARKERS. because charette has a crappy selection. or, they did when i was there last. and we don't have a hobby lobby here (sad, i know. but i'm in the land of michael's and acmoore and joann's).
also, i need color suggestions. i prefer to buy individual makers, because i can't afford to drop $200 on a set of them right now. but i can buy a couple at a time. so i want color suggestions. what are your favorites? what colors do you use all the time?

I bought mine from 3 places
Hanna Stamps
AllThatScraps and
www.animeoc.com
Anime was the cheapest, but they are running out of stock of the copic ciao's, they have the sketch for 4.68 each. I got 29 from them 2 weeks ago and today I got 8 more, the colors which were available that I already didn't have
I got about 29 from HannaStamps and about 20 from All that scraps.
I am looking to complete my whole connection.
As for colors I can't suggest, as my suggestion would be ALL. :p

Hey Ashley.. I was just looking for individual copics (Ciao) and found this site:
http://www.copicmarkers.com/storefro...6021&i=7979891

They have free shipping on sets of 12 or bigger. I have never used/ordered from them, but it looks like they have a large selection of individual markers.

I am looking to buy ink refills. I would suggest getting a good group of skin tones and then shades of your fav colors (3 shades each). There's a learning curve, but being a graphic designer, you should ace that curve

The shipping costs for a few markers would kill you though. Are you sure you don't have any art supply stores with the markers nearby?

I posted this message in a different thread about a week ago but thought it might be worth re-hashing. Here is some info I've gathered as far as purchasing Copics:

www.carpediemstore.com sells Copic sketch markers for $3.95 each BUT they only ship via FedEx so I think the shipping gets a little pricey. They don't sell the Ciao markers at all.

www.dickblick.com sells Copic sketch markers for $4.68 BUT they also only ship via FedEx so the shipping can be pricey, too. They only sell the Ciao markers in sets, not individually.

www.ellenhutson.com sells Copic sketch markers for $4.99 and ships via USPS priority mail so you can save on shipping costs. They don't sell the Ciao markers, either.

www.eclecticpaperie.com sells Copic sketch markers for $4.99 and the Ciao markers for $3.49. They ship via USPS, actual costs.

www.merriartist.com sells Copic sketch markers for $4.46 each and ships via USPS priority mail. They don't sell Ciaos.

www.animeoc.com sells Copic sketch markers for $4.68 and Copic ciao for $2.78. They ship via USPS priority as well.

www.hannastamps.com sells Copic Ciao markers for $3.33 and ships via USPS priority. They don't sell the sketch markers.

I know that this isn't an extensive list by any means, but it might give you a direction to start. I have personally ordered from Hanna Stamps, Eclectic Paperie, AnimeOC and MerriArtist and have had great service and shipping from all of them. Eclectic Paperie had a small delay in shipping but that was clearly listed on their website.

Good luck rounding out your collection :-)

i have one. but they carry like, NO copics. at all. their selection is crappy. they have every color prismacolor marker made, but only like, 30 copic colors. -sigh-

and thanks for the list, gwen. i'll check all the sites out once i get home.

I have ordered from copicmarkers.com and had great service. You can order custom sets (you pick from available colors) of both the Sketch or Ciao markers. If you by a set of 12 or more the shipping is free. I just looked at the site and the Sketch custom 12 clear box set is $53.55 so that makes each marker about $4.46 ea. You can either order your set in the clear plastic case for you can order them in a Super Wallet but they cost a little more. I am getting ready to do another order from them as soon as I can decide which colors I want next.

Don't feel too bad about Hobby Lobby and Copics. They have a VERY limited selection and VERY PRICEY, although you can use a coupon with them.

Remember to make sure you have the correct paper too so you won't be disappointed in your results.

I use Neenah Classic Crest Solar White or Georgia Pacific. The GP you can get at Walmart in the office supply dept.

I've ordered my Sketch markers from www.EllenHutson.com (wonderful service!) and www.merriartist.com. Any order from www.merriartist.com over $70 is free. I have ordered most of my Sketch markers from www.merriartist.com, order them on a Sunday, and have them in my hands by Wednesday, sometimes Tuesday!! They are WONDERFUL!

For those that want Ciao markers, I have ordered all of mine from www.AllThatScraps.com. Christine (the owner) is wonderful, and her service is excellent. Unfortunately, according to Marianne who is the U.S. Copic representative, Japan doesn't make the Ciaos as often as they do the Sketch markers, because the Ciaos are considered children's markers in Japan. The Ciaos also have limited colors (I think there are 142 Ciao colors, and 344 Sketch colors).

Hope this information helps someone out there!

i've added all of the links shared into my copics bookmark folder. so i can peruse them later, once i have some extra money to spend.
i did play with the ones i have some more yesterday. and i think practice is key. but i don't have any sort of system to them, i have random colors. that's what happens when the store has a limited selection (i actually might pop on down there tonight, see if they have anything new..)
thanks for all your help!
and i think i've figured out how to expand my colors! i have a list of what i have. and then i made a list of the 'essential colors' that are in the amuse 12-marker sets. so i'll start off with the essential colors. and then i'll go from there. and get colors to match those ones.

Ashley...
Make sure to print off a blank chart. Somewhere I read to print it off onto the cardstock you are going to use. Then, as you get the markers color the sections in. That way you can easily see what you have and what you "need."

HTH,
Ginger

**Oh, and on Copic's site they have a color chart filled in. I used that when I was trying to figure out what colors to get. I also printed that onto the cs that I use.

I ordered Copic sketch markers from Carpe Diem last month and had very good service. Very fast shipping. I ordered 40 markers on Sunday and they were delivered by FedEx on Friday. They had a slight problem processing my credit card, but emailed me promptly and a quick phone call cleared it up. Very nice to deal with. I plan to order some more from them shortly.

I ordered my Sketch from www.oozak.com. They are $3.90 (free shipping over $50) and come super-fast However, I just went in to order some more and it looks like they're out of nearly everything. IF you watch, they get shipments in from time to time and will post that on the right side of their homepage.

I was very disappoiinted with the selection at Hobby Lobby. Plus, many of them had been used and had ink smeared all over them. I used a 40% off coupon and they came to $3.85 (includes the tax). But, you can only get one at a time (I bought one and had dh buy one).

Dick Blick has a good selection, but I think they cost me $4.95, plus tax.

Keep stalking Oozak for the best deal!

Janet

Ok, here's a suggestion: check out http://ilikemarkers.blogspot.com for some serious help! I *LOVE* this blog! She won't tell you where to get'em, but she teaches a ton of technique related stuff. Look for her post relating to skin, lots of color choices & she shows you what 2 vs 3 colors looks like. The post about eyes was excellent too. Shoot, they're all excellent! I also own random colors (HL, one at a bloody time, sheesh) and am learning what I can do with them - and what I need to fill out my set.

**Oh, and on Copic's site they have a color chart filled in. I used that when I was trying to figure out what colors to get. I also printed that onto the cs that I use.
I can't find this on their website, do you happen to have a link? pretty please with a cherry on top?

What is the name of the store? Is there an English translation for the name? Hmmm--or where is it? I guess, how would I explain how to get to it?

Yeesh--I guess there may be a language thing....

Please let me know what you can...

Thanks,
Ginger

Look for her post relating to skin, lots of color choices & she shows you what 2 vs 3 colors looks like. The post about eyes was excellent too. Shoot, they're all excellent! I also own random colors (HL, one at a bloody time, sheesh) and am learning what I can do with them - and what I need to fill out my set.
Thanks for that - I don't know why I didn't realise there was a blog:rolleyes: it really has answered questions for me...

I was holding out for sketch (don't know why!) but I think ciao is the way to go for the basic colors. If I need sketch I can always buy individual colors and I can get 144 colours in ciao - thats a lot to be getting on with in the meantime!

I just ordered last night several more markers (18 ) from www.oozak.com, some were sketch some ciao.
their prices are pretty good, and they have free shipping for orders of over $50.

Thanks for posting the excel chart. I have made my own custom chart, I just split the markers in families and scribled a line of each color and wrote the number next to it, so I have my own chart =)
But this one is easier, as I add markers to my collection I don't need to remake the chart as I like everything to be organized by letter and number

I believe they offer a repeat customer discount. You make one copic purchase and then any repeat purchases you're charged the cheaper price. Honestly I did not think the shipping was any worse than other mail order places and I also believe no tax was charged. Bonus!

Shipping was $11 for one marker and $13 for 36 markers. LOL! So if you are going to order, make it worth you while. ;)

They offer 10% off after your first Copic order. So that makes the sketch markers like $3.55 each.

But oozak.com offers free shipping. So even with the 10% repeat discount at carpediemstore.com, I'd have to buy about 38 + markers to cover the shipping costs with the lower price, KWIM?

I ordered about 15 from oozak last night. I was okay with some things being out of stock. With free shipping over $50, I'll just fill in the others with another order when the get them instock.

I'm in love with my Sketch markers! Okay, you've all talked me into it. Time to go order more from Oozak!

P.S. IMO I would not order anything but the Sketch. I bought one of each and like Sketch much better than the others. But -- as I said - IMO.
