If you cut one circle from each size of the large set and stack them on top of each other you will have 1/4" difference all the way around each circle, but in actuality the circle from side to side is a 1/2" difference (1/4 on each side of the circle)
The small set is set up the same way. Set them on top of each other and there will be 1/4" difference all around the circle.
Stack both the small and the large together and you will have 1/8" difference around all the circles. (1/4" difference if you measure across)
The were specifically made in this way to give you options.
So if you want more scallop to show around the edge get the regular small and the scallop large? And if you don't get them both the same size? Just clarifying because I was wondering about this too.

I have all the nestabilities. Give me a few and I will die cut each size and stack them then I will scan them and post a picture. That might help you see.

Ok here we go. I was busy cutting out circles this morning while the kids ate breakfast.
I cut 2 qty of each die and alternated 2 colors in each set. I layered the Large Circle set and then the Small Circle set to show you that they create 1/4" borders.
then
I layered 1 die cut from both sets (large and small) to show you that they are different sizes and when combining the 2 sets, you get a 1/8" border.
The smallest die cut, I did in a light green and white and wrote the # and name of the die on it so you could know the difference.

I'm trying to decide what sizes to buy and this is what I've figured out.
It depends on whether you are talking regular shapes or scallop shapes. I went to Spellbinders site and found what the starting sizes were and figured out the size of each scalloped shape and for example the squares to have overlapping sizes.
Large Scalloped Squares start at 4x4 and scale down at 1/4 inch = 4x4-3.75x3.75-3.5x3.5-3.25x3.25-3x3
Small Scalloped Squares start at 3.75x3.75 and scale at 1/4 inch = 3.75x3.75-3.5x3.5-3.25x3.25-3x3-2.75x2.75
Large Squares start at 3.6 and scale down at 1/4 inch and the Small Squares start at 3.3 and scale down at 1/4 inch.
Large = 3.60-3.35-3.10-2.85-2.60-2.35-2.10
Small = 3.30-3.05-2.80-2.55-2.30-2.05-1.80

Just to clarify - there are not repetitive sizes within the shapes - I have the complete sets and they graduate. Some scalloped and plain of the same shape appear to have a repeat in sizes, but that is comparing apples and oranges. HTH!

I'm not comparing the scalloped to non scalloped I'm looking at the 2 scalloped square sets and according to spellbinders website they are with the exception of the large having a 4x4 and the small having a 2.5x2.5 they would be the same.
Someone needs to explain to me how they are different because I see no reason to buy the Classic Large Scallop Square and Classic Small Scallop Square sets or both of the Classic Circle Scallop sets because according to the measurements Spellbinders gives on their site both of these shapes would have overlapping sizes.

You do not have to have both. You can pick either, but if you get both you do get an 1/8 difference vs. 1/4 on your layer. There must be some typo in the description that the OP copied (I mean the company made one, not the OP) because there is no over lap of sizes.
If you buy them all you will have all totally different sized ones. If you get one set you will have lovely fun and they will be super nice, but you can only make mats with increments of 1/4 inch. Sometimes you might want a skinny 1/8 inch mat and if so you'd want both sizes.
I just promise. I know it reads like there is an overlap, I just promise there is not. Post #8 shows it really well.

That really does make sense Jennifer! I do have the benifit of having the dies in front of me to see what you mean, but yes, that's just it!
