"Since my childhood, I have always made works with polka dots. Earth, moon, sun and human beings all represent dots; a single particle among billions." ~ Yayoi Kusama
If you are not familiar with Ms. Kusama's work, I hope you look her up. I thought about including a link but wasn't sure which one to choose. She is 92 years old and has lived in a psychiatric hospital for half of her life. As a child, she had hallucinations and visions, mostly of dots. Amazingly, she used those dots to help herself cope with her daily fear and anxiety. Her mother was very controlling and did not want her to pursue her art so, in turn, she left Japan and got involved with the New York hippie scene. She is known for her polka dot pumpkins and her bright reddish orange hair. I have seen her work in MOWA catalogs. I didn't know how old she was or anything about her mental health. She is amazing!
A simple piece, using some white scratch paper that reveals rainbow colors (thought Lee would like that). I bought it for my grandchildren but also secretly for myself. I loved scratch art as a child.
