Colored Glass
by Lori Craig
Create quick and inexpensive colored glass votive holders to dress up your holiday mantle or dinner table.
Supplies
- Clear glass jar
- Mod Podge
- Water based dye ink refill
- Disposable plate
- Stirring utensil
Step-by-Step
-
Step 1
Squirt a liberal amount of Mod Podge onto disposable plate - a little more than you think you'll need to coat the inside of your glass.
-
Step 2
Squirt several drops of reinker into the Mod Podge. I used about 5-6 drops of Adirondack Cranberry.
-
Step 3
Mix colored dye and Mod Podge well.
-
Step 4
Pour mixture into glass container.
-
Step 5
Roll jar around to cover the inside with Mod Podge mixture. It will be thick and opaque, but do not worry as it dries translucent.
-
Step 7
Turn jar upside down to allow Mod Podge to completely dry.
-
Step 8
When Mod Podge mixture is clear and translucent, finish your jar as desired. I prefer to put trim around the top to hide any drips or imperfections in my dye application. Tag, ornament and ruffled seam binding shown here.

Step Variations
When color treating the inside of your glass jars, we don't suggest using it as a vase. You can, however, paint the Mod Podge & dye mixture on to the outside of your jar with a brush. The color on the jar will have a little texture, as shown in the pink jar on the right.
You don't have any Mod Podge? The green glass jar was created with Copic Various ink refill YG17. When using alcohol ink, you do not need to mix the dye with Mod Podge, and the drying time is significantly shorter. Swirl your ink refill inside the glass jar to coat, drain excess and allow to dry. Results as shown on far right.
