The background was created as an experiment using the "Embossing Folder Stamping" technique that can be found here: Embossing Folder Stamping Tutorials at Splitcoaststampers I used a Cuttlebug embossing folder called "Kassie's Brocade" to create the background panel using aqua and plum inks. I think it resulted in a very ethereal swirly ocean view.
The mermaid was stamped on heavy white cardstock using black ink, then hand colored using Copic markers. I used my Brother ScanNCut digital cutting machine to cut her out with a 0.04" border, then cut two more blank outlines to glue behind her to give her more depth so she would see like she's floating.
I created the round element in the sketch by stamping the largest shell from the Stampin' Up! (SU) "Friends Are Like Seashells" set onto blue paper that I had sprayed with a shimmery mist beforehand. I then die cut the shell out using it's matching SU "Seaside Seashells" dies. This shell was then glued to the card front.
The "waves" or "scales" were die cut from SU Bermuda Bay cardstock then glued across the shell as the horizontal element in the sketch.
I then glued the mermaid over the top of the "waves" in the sketch position.
I left the card front without a sentiment since I'm not quite sure if I'll send it to someone for their birthday, or as an inspiration card.
I am rating the difficulty level of this card as a "3" out of a possible "5" because of all the different steps. No one step was difficult, but taken as a whole, the card isn't one to be attempted by beginning card makers. I think it turned out really lovely, and look forward to sending it out for just the right occasion!
