On 3d cards I've sometimes had luck by leaving the lid open and using my hand to hold the card level. When I do this I drape a dark cloth over my hand and scanner window to block out the light.

Huh, I thought I was the world's biggest fan of Brilliance pads and inks but I've never used them for embossing. They are designed to dry faster than regular pigment pads, more like a dye ink does....
