I dilute my stampin' mist about 50% with water. Works great for me! The only reason I started diluting it was because I read about it on here. And I'm cheap!

I've painted lots of tins and metal lids. Usually spray paint works just fine, but if I'm in doubt I will scuff the surface first. And I always paint 2-3 coats. Good luck!

I just recently found a vanilla acid-free paint...

I just recently found a vanilla acid-free paint pen at my local scrap store. I've been using that and have been happy with it, although the tip is definitely thicker than a gel pen!
